The second annual nationwide event invites students across the U.S. to launch their own baking soda bottle rockets while sparking curiosity in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). Partnering with Emily Calandrelli (“ The Space Gal” ), Blue Origin's Club for the Future, Space Center Houston, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, and U.S. Space and Rocket Center, the initiative is designed to spark curiosity through hands-on science, with materials already found around the home, and inspire students to imagine their place in the future of space exploration. This year, Baking Soda Rocket Day expands to three flagship schools – in Queens, NY (PS127 Aerospace School), Houston, TX (Herrera Elementary), and Trenton, NJ (Paul Robeson Elementary) – along with 18,000 additional classrooms across the country.

“Baking Soda Rocket Day isn’t just about launching rockets, it’s about launching futures,” said Aaron Greengard, Senior Brand Manager of ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda. “Our goal is to give kids an accessible and exciting way to explore STEAM using materials they already have at home or in the classroom. By combining the everyday magic of baking soda with hands-on creativity, we hope to spark curiosity, build confidence, and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, artists, and innovators.”

Star Power in the Classroom

Aerospace engineer, best-selling author and Emmy-nominated television host, Emily Calandrelli returns for the second year, leading an in-person launch at the Queens flagship school and debuting a new instructional video for classrooms to participate nationwide. Her interactive experiment demonstrates how creativity, science, and perseverance work hand-in-hand in STEAM careers.

“After seeing the energy and excitement from students last year, I couldn’t be more thrilled to be back for year two of Baking Soda Rocket Day,” said Calandrelli. “This October also marks nearly one year since I had the life-changing opportunity to experience space myself. Sharing that perspective with students – and showing them how big their futures can be – makes this celebration even more meaningful.”

In Houston, former NASA astronaut Mike Foreman will appear in partnership with Space Center Houston to inspire local students with firsthand stories of space exploration and encourage them to pursue STEAM pathways. Foreman will also guide students through the rocket experiment as a way to teach how scientific principles connect to real-world space exploration.

“I'm excited to share my journey of becoming an astronaut, and living and working in space,” said Foreman. "Students are eager to learn and contribute. These young minds are the future of our workforce, and their passion for STEAM will fuel the discoveries and solutions that shape tomorrow’s world."

In Cape Canaveral, at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, local students will not only build and launch their own baking soda rockets but will also take part in a variety of STEAM-focused activities and experiments.

“At Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, one of our core missions is introducing the next generation of explorers to STEAM education through hands-on experiences. Baking Soda Rocket Day aligns seamlessly with this mission,” said Therrin Protze, Chief Operating Officer, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. “We are thrilled to partner with ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda for this exciting educational celebration.”

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s education team has partnered with ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda to extend its science education mission. “Our partnership with ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda helps us expand our STEAM lessons into teachers’ classrooms and home-learning environments,” Joseph Vick, Director of Museum Education at the Rocket Center, said. “Our educational missions align as we inspire students to reach for the stars through science while having fun.”

Messages That Reach the Stars

For 2025, ARM & HAMMER is teaming up with Club for the Future™ to bring its Message to the Stars campaign to Baking Soda Rocket Day. This year, students at the three participating flagship schools will write postcards that will fly aboard a future Blue Origin New Shepard mission and then will be stamped “flown to space” and returned to their creators. Participating classrooms nationwide will receive co-branded posters as they craft their own space-bound messages. Club for the Future will also have representatives onsite in Queens and Houston to participate in the bottle rocket experiment.

“At Club for the Future, we believe every student should have the opportunity to imagine their future in space,” said Heather Nelson, director, Club for the Future. “Through Baking Soda Rocket Day, students can create postcards that will actually travel to space and back, sparking imagination while connecting them to a real-life spaceflight.”
