ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar 12, 2026--

Rune Technologies, which builds AI-enabled predictive software for military logistics in contested environments, today announced a $2 million Direct to Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from the U.S. Army. This award supports the Army's PORTAL (Predict, Optimize, Recommend, and Track for Adaptive Logistics) program through the Army Applications Laboratory (AAL) in association with Army FUZE.

Over the next 18 months, Rune will partner with the 1st Cavalry Division, based in Fort Hood, Texas, to deploy its TyrOS platform across multiple echelons. The system will replace legacy manual processes, which has already demonstrated its resilience and efficacy in exercises with the 25th Infantry Division, 4th Infantry Division, XVIII Airborne Corps, and even the 1st Cavalry Division in a separate engagement. These stress tests are important milestones in developing measurable improvements in sustainment speed, accuracy, and decision quality.

The PORTAL program addresses a critical need in modern military operations: logistics systems that can function when communications are denied, disrupted, intermittent, or limited. Traditional logistics systems struggle to integrate data from disparate Army platforms and cannot operate effectively when adversaries target supply lines and communications infrastructure. TyrOS addresses this issue through an edge-first architecture that embeds intelligence directly at the tactical level, enabling units to track assets, predict potential shortfalls, and receive optimized courses of action without requiring constant connectivity.

"The Army faces increasingly complex logistics challenges as near-peer adversaries develop capabilities to disrupt traditional supply chains," said David Tuttle, Co-Founder and CEO of Rune Technologies. "This contract validates our approach of building software that works at the tactical edge, where decisions get made, rather than relying on distant servers that become unavailable in contested environments. We're honored to support the Army's efforts to maintain logistics superiority in any operational scenario."

The Direct to Phase II designation recognizes that Rune's predictive logistics technology has already achieved sufficient feasibility. The SBIR contract allows the Army to accelerate adoption by supporting rigorous military testing and integration with existing systems rather than starting from basic research.

Under the contract, Rune will refine TyrOS to integrate with existing Army systems, including the Joint Battle Command Platform and Global Combat Support System-Army. The platform will provide commanders with three core capabilities: real-time tracking of logistics assets and supply chains, predictive modeling to anticipate disruptions and shortfalls before they become emergencies, and AI-generated courses of action for resupply routes, resource allocation, and risk mitigation. This 18-month effort focuses on rigorous field testing with operational units, featuring measurable capabilities that address Army requirements and clear technical milestones.

This contract marks another significant milestone for Rune with the Army, which recently became the first company selected by both prime contractor teams on the Army's NGC2 program: Lockheed Martin and Anduril.

“We are bringing intelligent planning to Sustainers in the 1 st Cavalry Division,” said SSG Mickey Reeve, program manager for PORTAL. “Rune will be developing their capabilities based on Warfighter feedback during collective training in challenging missions meant to emulate threats of capable adversaries.”

The Rune team emphasizes solving problems from the point of need upward rather than imposing enterprise systems on tactical environments, reflecting an edge-first philosophy. This method, coupled with a proven ability to rapidly deliver, validate, and iterate fielded software in collaboration with soldiers, is core to Rune’s approach to technology development.
