Twenty years ago, I sat in a small office in Montana, gazing out at a horizon that took my breath away. From that corner window, I had a front-row seat to an immense demonstration of God’s power. The Rocky Mountains stood like gentle giants, rising from the green valley floor into the clouds. There was a perfect “v” in the mountain chain that framed the white-topped peaks of Glacier National Park, acting as a constant, immovable monument to His magnificence.
Back then, I wrote about how those mountains were a glorious reminder that “my help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2).
Today, my view has changed. I no longer look out at the rugged, snow-capped Rockies. Instead, I find myself in the rolling beauty of the Arkansas Ozarks. The landscape is different—the peaks are softer, the greens are deeper, and the morning mist clings to the hollows in a way that feels like a quiet invitation to prayer.
But even though the scenery has shifted, the truth behind the view remains exactly the same.
The Beauty of the Most Beautiful
Whether it is the jagged edges of a Montana peak or the sun rising over an Arkansas forest, creation is a display of the “Beauty of the Most Beautiful.” These landscapes were formed by the spoken Word of God, yet they are more than just scenery. They are reminders that the God who moves mountains—and the God who carves out quiet valleys—is the same God who is intimately involved in our lives today.
In Psalm 125:2, we are reminded: "As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forevermore."
In Montana, I felt surrounded by His strength. In Arkansas, I feel surrounded by His peace. In every season, His presence is the constant.
A Work in Progress
When I look back at that post from two decades ago, I realize that I was a different woman then. I’ve walked through many more valleys since then, and I’ve climbed a few more mountains. What I’ve discovered is that creation isn’t something that just happened “in the beginning.”
Creation is still taking place today as God recreates me—and you—through His Word spoken to our hearts. He is still smoothing out our rough edges and planting seeds of grace in the soil of our lives.
My prayer today is the same as it was twenty years ago: that I can stand as a small testimony to God’s magnitude. I want my life to be a minor display of the Most Beautiful, reflecting His light regardless of which window I’m looking out of.
Standing on the Rock
If you are facing a “mountain” of a challenge today, or if you are resting in a quiet valley, remember that the Maker of heaven and earth is your help. The scenery of our lives changes—we move, we grow, we face new seasons—but the Rock of Ages stands immovable.
Take a moment today to look out your own window. Whether you see a city street, a suburban backyard, or rolling hills, look for the evidence of His glory. He is there, and He is still making all things new.
A Prayer for Your Journey
Dear Lord, thank You for the way Your creation speaks of Your greatness. Whether I am standing in the shadow of a mountain or walking through a quiet meadow, help me to see Your hand at work. Thank You for being my help and my shield. I ask that You would continue the work of creation in my own heart today. Recreate me through Your Word, smooth away my fears, and let my life be a reflection of Your beauty to everyone I meet. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
