(Sacramento, CA) -- Two Sacramento men and a Vacaville woman are among 28 people charged in a federal investigation into allegations of illegal voting and fraudulent voter registration. The Vacaville woman is accused of registering and voting in 2024 while falsely claiming U.S. citizenship. She was released without bail. One Sacramento man is accused of falsely claiming U.S. citizenship to register and voting in several elections. The other faces similar charges for voting in November 2024. The charges are part of a federal election law investigation called "Operation Protect the Vote." All 28 people arrested are green card holders, so they are in the US legally. However, they are not U.S. citizens and cannot vote in federal elections.

An assailant shot a Georgia National Guard member in the leg on Sunday after Guard troops attempted to break up a street fight on Washington, D.C., Barracks Row. Three Guard members returned fire at the individuals, striking the alleged gunman, according to law enforcement. The suspect, 41-year-old Jerrell Jackson of Southeast D.C., now faces multiple charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Jackson has a lengthy rap sheet including two counts of assault of a police officer, illegally carrying a pistol, and several parole violations. Law enforcement identified the wounded Guard member as Karon Jones from Lawrenceville, Georgia. He was treated and later released. Back in November 2025, another National Guard member was killed during a fatal shooting carried out by Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who also shot and wounded another Guard member. According to the state's Department of Social Services, the toddler took the firearm from an unzipped fanny pack that was left on the floor, placing it barrel side in their mouth. That director and another staff member were reportedly looking at their phones at the time. The daycare center, which has not had a clean inspection since March 10th, is temporarily closed for investigation.
