WAKEFIELD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 30, 2025--

The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), a collaboration of innovators working together to define and deploy open standards that power the next generation of media experiences, today announced it has received a Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) for its AV1 video codec standard.

AV1 is an open video codec designed to deliver high-quality video with less bandwidth than previous codecs – allowing video programs to reach more people more efficiently and more affordably. As a global standard, AV1 is deployed across a variety of popular platforms and devices.

“AOMedia thanks NATAS for recognizing the impact of AV1 on media and entertainment, and the hard work of the many innovators – from individuals to large organizations – whose dedication has made the standard a success. These innovators came together in 2015 with a fresh approach to developing open media standards, and AV1 stands as clear proof of the power of that approach,” said Dr. Pierre-Anthony Lemieux, Executive Director of AOMedia.

NATAS announced the honorees for the upcoming 76th Annual Technology and Engineering Emmy® Awards, citing AOMedia and its AV1 specification as a winner. Launched in 1948, The Awards honor development and innovation in broadcast technology and recognize companies, organizations and individuals for breakthroughs in technology that have had a significant effect on broadcast engineering.

The Emmy® Award win comes on the heels of another win for AOMedia at the recent IBC Convention in Amsterdam. At the event, AOMedia was presented a 2025 IBC Innovation Award in the Content Everywhere category for its SVT-AV1 software encoder. SVT-AV1 reduces decoding complexity without sacrificing compression efficiency. It was recognized for its success making video streaming viable on low-end mobile devices and low-bandwidth networks.
