Suspended officer ruled competent for trial in wife slaying

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) — A suspended New Jersey police lieutenant has been ruled competent to stand trial on murder and other charges in the slaying of his estranged wife and the wounding of her boyfriend last summer. Forty-nine-year-old Lt. John Formisano pleaded not guilty Monday following the ruling. The 24-year veteran of the Newark police department is charged in the July 14 death of 37-year-old Christine Solaro-Formisano in Jefferson Township. Formisano was arrested hours later in a parking lot in Livingston. A prosecutor said a plea offer was planned, and Formisano's attorney said he and his client would consider whatever was offered.
