Senate Republicans, fed up with Democratic delays and stall tactics, used the “nuclear option” Wednesday to reduce debate time on most presidential nominees.
Politico reports the move by Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to go with the nuclear option, otherwise known as the “Reid Rule”, paves the way to expedite confirmations of President Trump’s judicial and executive branch picks that have still not been completed.
McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer exchanged barbs over the move, with Schumer calling it a “sad day in the Senate’s history.”
In response, McConnell trashed Democrats’ “systematic obstruction” in the confirmation process for executive and judicial appointments.
