American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., today announced the completion of its 2025 Future Wavemakers Internship Program, a cornerstone initiative designed to cultivate the next generation of water and wastewater industry leaders. This year, the program welcomed 33 college interns from across the country, offering hands-on experience in engineering, water quality, operations, health and safety, communications and more.

“The future of the water industry relies on investing in people,” said Lori Sutton, EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer, American Water. “Through programs such as the Future Wavemakers internship for college students, Flow Forward educational initiatives for high school students, and Water UP!, which provides hands-on utility training for adults, American Water is dedicated to cultivating opportunities for the next generation, while continuing to develop our current workforce.”

Future Wavemakers is built on a foundation of mentorship, professional development, and real-world projects that align with both students’ academic backgrounds and American Water’s organizational goals. Interns participated in capstone projects, networking events, and skill-building workshops, all while contributing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the company.

“I love it here! Not only am I learning so much here at American Water, but I appreciate how much my mentor encourages learning. It makes asking any type of question a lot easier,” said Future Wavemakers intern.

This summer, American Water also launched its inaugural Flow Forward high school internship program in Pennsylvania, expanding opportunities for younger students to explore careers in the water and wastewater industry. Flow Forward offers high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors a multi-day summer camp featuring skill-building workshops, resume and interview preparation, and networking with industry professionals. The program aims to boost awareness, provide practical experience, and attract emerging talent to the water sector.
