Overnight in Jerusalem.

Dennis Prager – Alternative Day Plan:

Safed – Considered one of the four holy cities in Israel, Safed has been a spiritual hub since the 1600’s when it was the center of the Kabbala (Jewish mysticism) with the Kabbalist mystics living, studying & teaching there. It is a picturesque mountain city wrapped in mysticism and beauty, with visitors, seekers and worshippers wandering through its alleyways past artists’ studios, galleries and workshops.

Gesher- Leaving the biblical period behind us, we will travel to the site of Gesher on the Jordan River. Gesher means “bridge” in Hebrew and here we find three bridges over the Jordan River, with the oldest one dating to the Roman period. The Israeli / Jordanian border runs right down the middle of the River, and we will descend to the river edge to explore the historic bridges and learn about the fierce battle that took place there during the 1948 war of independence. This also is the site of the tragic 1997 massacre in which Jordanian troops opened fire at a group of Israeli schoolgirls on a class field trip, killing seven and injuring six others.

Beit Shean – According to the Bible, the Israelite tribes were unable to capture the important Canaanite city of Bet She’an which, in time, became the tragic symbol of defeat when the Philistines overpowered Saul’s army on the nearby Mount Gilboa and hung the headless bodies of King Saul and his sons on the city walls. King David, who vowed to avenge Saul, conquered Bet She’an, but the city eventually fell to the Assyrians and was left in ruins until 107 BCE when the Hasmoneans liberated it, resettled, and restored its biblical name. In 63 CE, however, when the Romans took over the region, the city was again transformed and joined the alliance of cities called the Decapolis. It stands today as a witness of the epic historic struggles over this land.

Day 7 (Monday, Nov 9) – Jerusalem the Old

Jerusalem-the-Old

We will tour of the politically disputed lines of division between east and west Jerusalem, learn the historical and strategic importance of Armon Hanatziv hill, visit Mt Zion, enter the Old City of Jerusalem through the Zion Gate and walk the famous “roofs path” to the Western Wall, Temple Mount and Holy Sepulcher. Overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 8 (Tuesday, Nov 10) – Jerusalem the New

Jerusalem-the-New

Today we will visit Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial, and continue on to the Garden Tomb and to Bethlehem for an afternoon visit with a Palestinian Christian leader. Overnight in Jerusalem.

Dennis Prager – Alternative Day Plan:

Yad Vashem – The Holocaust Memorial Museum commemorates the suffering, heroism, and moving personal stories of Europe’s Jewish population which perished under the Nazi regime.

Mt. Herzl – Named for Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, Hezl’s tomb lies at the top of the hill next to Israel’s military cemetery for its fallen soldiers. The Museum includes a spectacular audio-visual encounter with the visionary of the Jewish State with a thought provoking 60 minute look into the Jewish world according to Herzl’s vision. This is the place of the national aperture of Israel’s Independence Day and the resting place of Israel’s great national leaders.

Gush Etzion – Comprising a number of vigorous Jewish settlements in the heart of the disputed region of Judea where heroic battles were fought during the 1948 War of Independence. Efrat, its Regional Council which serves over 15 vibrant Jewish communities, was established in 1983 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of Jerusalem between Bethlehem and the City of Hebron inside of the Security Barrier, is a remarkable testimony of the vibrancy & strength of Jewish life in its ancient homeland. We will meet with and hear from local officials and scholars.

Day 9 (Wednesday, Nov 11) – Dead Sea & Masada

the Dead Sea Experience Israel Tour 2015

Traveling south through the dramatic landscapes of the Judean wilderness we will descend to the Dead Sea, earth’s lowest spot, and enjoy its mineral waters and mud baths. In the afternoon we will hike the Ein Gedi desert oasis where David took refuge from King Saul, and ascend with cable car to the ancient freedom fortress of Masada. Overnight in Jerusalem.
